💡 Accountant's Note
General soil preparation for annual crops is usually expensed in the period it occurs.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Land preparation costs (contract tilling, ripping, deep plowing, subsoil drainage) for annual crops are operating expenses — code them to the crop cost centre for the upcoming season so that total cost-of-production can be tracked against revenue from that crop. For perennial crops or bearer plant establishment, some ground preparation costs (permanent drainage infrastructure, laser levelling) may qualify for capitalization as land improvements (see Land Improvement entries). Fuel, contractor invoices, and own-equipment depreciation related to preparation activities should all be captured in the same cost centre.
⚠️ Audit Flags
(1) Capitalization boundary — distinguish between routine annual cultivation (expense) and permanent soil improvements (capitalize as land improvement). Deep ripping that creates a lasting soil structure change may be capitalizable; annual plowing is not. (2) Period matching — pre-season preparation costs incurred shortly before period-end are an expense of that period even if planting happens in the next period. Do not defer these costs as a prepaid. (3) Contract labour vs. own equipment costs — for own-equipment tillage, the fuel, depreciation, and operator wages should be captured via internal cost allocation.
