These are not expenses until they are actually spread on the field or planted in the ground.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Bulk agricultural inputs (fertilizer, seed, chemicals) should be held in a Supplies Inventory account until they are applied in the field. The ERP should track quantities on hand by product type and storage location. When inputs are consumed (fertilizer spread, seed planted), an inventory consumption entry transfers the cost from Supplies Inventory to Agricultural Operating Expense (or directly to the crop cost centre). Physical stocktakes of inputs in storage should be performed at each period-end to verify the inventory balance. For cooperative purchasing arrangements, inputs may arrive on consignment — ensure consignment goods are excluded from the entity's own inventory balance.
⚠️ Audit Flags
(1) Period-end inventory count — are all inputs physically on hand counted and reconciled to the Supplies Inventory ledger balance? Unrecorded consumption inflates inventory. (2) Valuation — inputs are valued at lower of cost and NRV under IAS 2. If fertilizer prices have declined significantly since purchase, an NRV write-down may be required. (3) Prepayments for future-season inputs — if inputs are paid for in advance but not yet delivered, they should be classified as a prepayment (current asset), not Supplies Inventory, until physical delivery occurs.
📄 Required Documentation
