Routine AI (artificial insemination) services, semen purchases, and pregnancy testing fees are expensed as agricultural operating costs in the period incurred. For elite genetics programs — where the entity is developing and owning a proprietary genetic line through embryo transfer programs, embryo flushing, and IVF — the question of whether the genetic development costs meet the IAS 38 criteria for an intangible asset should be assessed (identifiable, controlled, probable future economic benefit, reliably measurable cost). In most cases this is difficult to satisfy and expensing remains appropriate.

(1) Capitalization vs. expense — are any breeding program costs being capitalized into a genetic intangible asset? If so, the IAS 38 recognition criteria must be robustly demonstrated. (2) Related party AI services — if breeding services are sourced from a related entity (a stud farm co-owned by the same family), pricing must be at arm's length and disclosed under IAS 24. (3) Costs incurred for future seasons — AI doses purchased at period-end but not yet used should remain in Supplies Inventory until conception attempts are made.
