💡 Accountant's Note

Under IAS 16, bearer plants are treated like Fixed Assets (Machinery). You capitalize the cost of planting and tending to them until they reach maturity.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Create a separate PPE asset class for bearer plants — distinct from land, buildings, and farm machinery — so that depreciation rates, useful lives, and revaluation policies can be configured independently. During the immature (pre-productive) phase, all directly attributable costs (seedlings, planting labour, establishment irrigation, training and tying costs for vines) are accumulated against the asset record as capital expenditure. Set the asset status to 'under construction / immature' in the ERP to suppress depreciation until commercial maturity is reached. If borrowing costs are directly attributable to the bearer plant establishment under IAS 23, configure the ERP to capitalize the relevant interest component during the development period.

⚠️ Audit Flags

(1) Overhead allocation — if internal farm staff are used for planting, the labour cost capitalized must be limited to directly attributable hours at actual cost rates; general farm overhead should not be swept into the asset. (2) Boundary between bearer plants and biological assets — the produce growing on a bearer plant (e.g., apples on an apple tree) is a biological asset measured at fair value under IAS 41. The bearer plant itself (the tree) is PPE under IAS 16. These must be clearly separated in the accounts. (3) IAS 23 interest capitalization — if borrowings were taken specifically to fund the orchard establishment, only the interest on those specific borrowings (or a weighted average rate on general borrowings if no specific borrowing) may be capitalized.

📄 Required Documentation

Planting contracts and invoices, seedling/cutting purchase records, establishment labour timesheets, IAS 23 borrowing cost calculation (if applicable), and site plan documenting the planting area and species.
