How to Record Dynamic Podcast Ad Insertion Revenue
Recording revenue for digital audio ads that are inserted into a podcast episode at the moment a listener hits 'play.'
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accounts Receivable - Audio Advertiser | Asset (+) | 8,000.00 | - |
| Revenue - Digital Audio / Podcast | Revenue (+) | - | 8,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) allows different listeners to hear different ads in the same podcast episode. Revenue is recognized on a CPM basis as the 'downloads' or 'listens' occur. This is distinct from 'Host-Read' ads (baked-in), where revenue is often recognized 100% when the episode is first published.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
The 'Audio Server' provides a download count. It is important to filter for 'valid downloads' (IAB v2.1 standards) to avoid over-recognizing revenue from bot downloads.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Thresholds for 'Listens.' Most contracts define a 'listen' as a download of at least 60 seconds of audio. Revenue recognized on partial downloads may be subject to reversal.
