Influencer Marketing - Campaign Prepayment
Recording an upfront payment to a social media influencer for a series of sponsored posts that have not yet gone live.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prepaid Marketing - Influencer Deposits | Asset (+) | 25,000.00 | - |
| Cash | Asset (-) | - | 25,000.00 |
| Advertising Expense / TAC | Expense (+) | 25,000.00 | - |
| Prepaid Marketing - Influencer Deposits | Asset (-) | - | 25,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Influencers often demand 100% payment before posting. This is a prepaid asset. The expense is only recognized when the post goes live (performance obligation met). If the influencer is managed through an AdTech platform, the platform must determine if it is the Principal or Agent in this transaction.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Managed through a 'Prepaid' amortization schedule. In high-volume influencer agencies, this is automated via 'Campaign Start/End Dates' in the platform.
⚠️ Audit Flags
The 'Screenshotted Proof of Posting.' Auditors will sample campaign dates to ensure the expense wasn't 'parked' in prepaids to hide a poor quarter.
📄 Required Documentation
Influencer agreement, proof of payment, and screenshots/links to the live content.
